Since learning the ability to walk Doug has striking pots and pans and numerous other objects around the house until he began playing drum set at the age of 12. His first influences being the realm of rock and hip hop. He also sang since childhood and in choir in school. At the age of 16 he began writing his first songs/compositions while at the same time becoming immersed in hand percussion. His first percussion instrument aside from drum set was the djembe.

After gaining a scholarship and attending his final year of high school at Idyllwild performing arts high school in southern California, he decided to put all his energy into percussion and attended the renowned Berklee college of music for performance. There he studied world music with an emphasis in Cuban and Brazilian rhythms. He studied under greats in the music/drumming industry like Jamey Haddad, Eugie Castrillo, Ricardo Monzon, Ernesto Diaz, Kenwood Denard, and many more.

ADuring his 2nd year he traveled to Guinea West Africa and studied Djembe and Guinean traditional percussion with Berklee professor Mohammed Kalifa Kamara. After graduating Cum Laude from Berklee, Doug traveled solo to Kingston, Jamaica and Havana, Cuba for 3 months. Since then he has performed and studied in Haiti with a network of musicians through a nonprofit. His most recent studies being in Rio de Janeiro and Salvador, Bahia Brazil with an incredible network of Brazil’s top players and received an invite to perform in carnival upon his return with the Mangueria samba school in Rio.

Doug currently records and performs with a variety of artists in NYC and LA. He tours extensively throughout the US and Hawaii as well as internationally in Europe, Canada, Australia, Mexico, and all over the world. Here in the US he has performed in world famous venues like Red Rocks Amphitheatre and both Greek Theatres. He is now becoming the go to studio performing percussionist in NYC, especially in many contemporary styles as well as gaining a reputation for drums and sound production and arrangement on studio tracks as well. He has released recorded samples of his work, playing instruments accrued from travels and as well as conceptual recordings like “ water drumming”. He is currently establishing this brand as RARE PERCUSSION instruments. There will be many more releases in the future.

Doug has been carving out a name as the Go-To percussionist for many pop, R&B, Hip Hop, singer songwriter, gospel, jazz, soul, funk, and electronic artists. He seamlessly weaves traditional Latin/African techniques with the modern touch and textures for today’s production and new styles of music both on and off the stage. He does this with an ambitious and progressive vision in the future of percussion while also having profound respect for the music of the past.
